CPI Training Programs

CPI Training: Parents of children with ASD deal with more stress, especially if their child demonstrates self-injurious and aggressive behavior. The purpose of this study is to evaluate whether “Parent-based Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) physical administration training program” (i.e., P-CPI) for parents of children with ASD helps alleviate some of this stress and broaden parental self-efficacy, physical management competency, and overall quality of life.

Participants who face criteria will be randomly assigned to either the treatment group or the waitlist control group. Participants assigned to the treatment group will be invited to a 6-hour P-CPI group instruction session. This parent-based instruction in CPI’s Nonviolent Crisis Intervention® will include nonverbal, paraverbal, verbal, and physical intervention techniques. Participants assigned to the waitlist group will be encouraged to continue their existing medical support, or services, as they typically would. The waitlist group will be urged to participate in the P-CPI training at the conclusion of the post-assessment period.

CPI Training Programs

Baseline measures will be on the day of instruction for the treatment group and within five days of the P-CPI instruction for the waitlist group. Follow-up parts will be at 2-week, and 1, 2, and 3- month post-baseline. The medication group will also participate in a follow-up group interview.

Baseline measures will be overseen on the day of training and follow-up measures at 2-week, 1-month, 2-month, and 3-month post baseline. The treatment group will also perform in an in-person follow-up group qualitative interview.

WOW! The Owner/Speaker is my HERO! Thanks for keepingUS SAFE! Your work history includingMilitary service…I’m speechless! You made the speech therapist speechless! I barely blinked through the whole course. You had my attention with your straight forward talk, videos andvideo reaction. I really liked that there were few slides with simple pictures all without too much wording…it made me want to accept to you more. I liked the sentence that you ever so casually started that went object like…Well back when I was on the swat team….i mean. WOW! How many people can open a sentence with that?? You’ve spent your whole life making a real diversity. Captivating course and speaker!

CPI Training For Teachers

The Crisis Prevention Institute offers nonviolent crisis intervention training designed to teach best practices for regulating difficult situations and disruptive behaviors. Students learn how to identify at-risk individuals and use nonverbal and verbal techniques to defuse hostile or combative behavior. They also learn how to control their fear and anxiety in a crisis and avoid injury when a crisis becomes physical. Students are taught how to respond to a variety of situations, including natural disasters, terrorist attacks, and fires.

The CPI also offers a training module called Prepare Training, which focuses on crisis intervention in the workplace. The program was created to address workplace safety issues and develop positive communication skills. These programs are offered periodically around the country. Some instructions also use the flex learning option where students complete an online module prior to the course. In addition to on-site nonviolent crisis intervention programs, the CPI also offers free webinars and sells relevant online learning materials on its website. For instance, individuals can purchase the Angry-Smile online training course, which provides education in the psychological underpinnings of passive-aggressive behavior in the workplace and other settings. There are also online videos available for purchase covering topics like:

  • Verbal intervention
  • Setting limits
  • Confidence when facing conflicts
  • Crisis prevention techniques

The dementia care specialists program offered by the CPI is designed for social workers, therapists, and other caregivers. Students learn how to recognize the stages of dementia, such as Alzheimer’s, and deliver care based on their patients’ abilities. This training enables caregivers to spend less time on behavioral issues and more time on patient care.

CPI Training Test

Students who complete a three- or four-day seminar and pass a program assessment can become CPI Certified Instructors. These instructor certification programs train participants not only to respond to crisis situations but also to teach their peers. Instructor certification is available in the areas of nonviolent crisis intervention and Prepare Training. Students who complete these programs may be able to receive continuing education credits from their state nursing, education, or counseling boards, among others.

Certified instructors must attend a renewal course every one to two years to maintain their credentials. The CPI currently offers advanced courses available only for certified instructors in the following areas:

  • Autism spectrum disorders
